An oasis of tranquillity is how staff and patients have described the garden at the heart of Kingston Hospital.
The small plot of land that lies between the Esher and Regent wings has been transformed into a secluded garden, which has been designed to reduce stress and to help visitors relax.
The garden, which includes a water feature, outdoor sculptures and seating areas, was created by a team of nursing staff at the hospital with the help of some landscape designers and funding from the King's Fund, an independent healthcare charity.
Their efforts were rewarded last week when they received a townscape award in the Kingston Society's biennial ceremony celebrating the town's newest landmarks.
Sister Helen Shaw, medical secretary Jacqui Colnaghi and Sister Sandra Howard (pictured with their award) said the garden had been an "undeniable success" and was enjoyed by both staff and patients.
