MORE Bexley residents are being encouraged to take part in a scheme aimed at reducing crime in the borough.
The initiative, Alleygater, aims to provide gates to close off problem alleyways which are often a target for anti-social behaviour and rubbish.
It is supported by Bexley's Community Safety Partnership a group designated to battle crime and disorder consisting of 35 statutory, voluntary and private organisations.
Three alleyways in Slade Green, as well as several in Blackfen and Welling, have already been furnished with gates and 20 other zones in the borough have been pin-pointed.
Council leader and chairman of the partnership Councillor Chris Ball said: "Gating alleyways is a valuable tool in crime reduction because it secures areas which are an attraction for anti-social and criminal behaviour.
"Securing alleyways also reduces incidents of littering and can help make people feel safer."
Every resident involved in the scheme will hold a key to the gates and will be responsible for keeping them closed and locked.
Before choosing a company to make and install the alleygates, residents can consult the council for advice by contacting the highways and amenity services department on 020 8303 7777 ext 5562.
