HISTORY buffs are calling for Lewisham to have its own dedicated museum.
The Lewisham Local History Society has campaigned on the issue for more than a decade.
Though there are museums within the borough, such as the Horniman Museum, in London Road, there is not one dedicated to the history of the area itself.
The group is pressuring Lewisham Council to fund an institution to chart development of the borough.
But the society's programme secretary John King feels the issue is not top of the council's agenda.
Mr King said: "What has been missing is money and determination from the council.
"At least we had a museum development officer and, though she has now left, perhaps she has sown the seeds."
Mr King added: "I think it is a shame the council seems to lack the will to get a museum."
A spokesman for Lewisham Council said: "We are committed to promoting Lewisham's heritage and making it accessible to all people.
"It is our intention all new developments include a heritage aspect but there are no plans to build a new museum."
