THREE people were rushed to A&E with burns from deep-fat fryers in Watford on Friday, Jaunary 24, prompting firefighters to issue a safety warning to residents.
Two men had their arms scorched and suffered smoke inhalation after they tried to douse a fryer fire with water at a restaurant in St Albans Road, Garston.
An elderly man was alerted to a fire in his unattended chip pan when the smoke alarm went off at his home in Charlotte Way, Watford.
He also attempted to extinguish the blaze with water.
Watford Fire Station commander Simon Brown said: "We would like to remind people that any fire involving fat must not be extinguished using water.
"First you should turn off the heat. Then place a damp tea towel over the lid or pan and leave it for half an hour. Finally, always call the fire brigade.
"Ideally, do not use deep-fat fryers have oven chips instead."
