Widespread rumours that a site in Sydney Road will be used to house asylum seekers have been strongly denied by Sutton Council.
And though residents were informed the claim, which came in the form of an anonymous leaflet door-drop, is untrue the message was reiterated in a public meeting at Robin Hood Junior School, Thorncroft Road, on Saturday.
The meeting, which was attended by ward councillors as well as housing association representatives, also revealed plans to build 30 affordable homes on the site.
Sutton's executive head of housing and regeneration Peter Dolan said: "It is part of the council's commitment to regeneration to redevelop sites and certainly not part of a policy to house asylum seekers."
