Vandals are repeatedly opening a gate on a Selhurst Road side road, allowing it to be used by drivers wanting to take a short cut around the diversion route around the closed railway bridge.
The gate, on Dagnall Park, a residential road linked to Selhurst Road either side of the rail bridge, is supposed to stop traffic from travelling the length of the road.
But since works to repair the Selhurst Road rail bridge began, it has been opened regularly and used as a way to avoid the heavy traffic along the Park Lane, Whitehorse Lane and Whitehorse Road diversion route. A Croydon Council spokesperson said: "Because of vandalism, the gate is being opened and we are having to go back and re-close it."
Dagnall Park resident, Jean Price, said: "It's been open for over a week. It's mayhem there on rush hours. If people are not careful, there's going to be an accident."
With Selhurst Road due to remain closed until mid-March, some local residents want to ease traffic pressure by opening the gate and changing the diversion route.
