Another cultural predicament which could affect youngsters in the borough may soon be facing Croydon Council.
The local authority is expected to be called upon for financial support following the announcement that the Association of London Government (ALG) grants committee is likely to cut £90,000 of annual funding from the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon.
The Polka, which opened 24 years ago, is the only theatre in Britain producing and presenting work specifically for children, and it draws around half its yearly audience of 100,000 youngsters from Croydon, Sutton, Merton, Kingston, Wandsworth and Merton.
The proposed £90,000 cut, which would hit the theatre in April, would destroy its educational work as well as making visits difficult for children who have special needs or from low-income families.
The Polka is appealing for public support. People can help by contacting their borough representative on the ALG grants committee, Councillor Raj Chandarana, Croydon's cabinet member for culture, by post or email by no later than next Tuesday (February 4).
