A PLANNING task force is being proposed for Enfield Town centre which could turn it into ''a cultural focus as well as a shopping centre fit for the 21st century consumer'', according to council leader Michael Rye.

The creation of a Project Board to review the next planning phase will be discussed at next week's Enfield Council cabinet meeting, after property experts advised proper consultation with Enfield businesses and residents over the future of the town centre.

Mr Rye said: "At the moment we have the exciting new phase two development of the town centre going through the pipeline."

"This has provided us with an excellent opportunity to re-configure the town into a flagship shopping centre. It would mean a customer and commuter-friendly layout and will keep and enhance the architecture and green character of the town centre."

"The emphasis would not be on a new development, but rather improvement of the existing facilities. We would wish to retain what is elegant and traditional, but ensure the town centre works for those who live, work or visit there."

The task force will also evaluate the existing council-owned land and buildings.

The board is to be composed of council officers from leisure, education and property departments and will include an elected councillor.
