Victims of brain injuries and their families should be given greater support from the Government, Siobhain McDonagh MP has told the House of Commons.
Addressing the house during a debate on brain injury rehabilitation services, the Mitcham and Morden member aimed to raise the profile of those affected by brain damage.
She said: "Each year about 1million people attend hospital as a result of head injury.
"On average, in places like Mitcham or Morden, between 15 and 20 people suffer a severe head injury.
"Most people recover but a number of families and individuals have to live with the consequences for a long time."
She was watched from the public gallery by a number of constituents, including Councillor Peter McCabe, chief executive of the brain injury charity Headway and a member of Merton Council.
Ms McDonagh is a member of the Commons Health Select Committee, which published a detailed report on head injuries in 2001.
