Injury-hit Kingston Wildcats ran out narrow winners over Hackney Whiteheat in the National Basketball Conference last Saturday.
Jamie Whitaker was the main offensive threat in the first quarter, scoring regularly, but a series of three-pointers meant Hackney finished the period seven points ahead.
Kingston stepped up the intensity in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors by two to one, to lead 42-38 at half-time.
Hackney started to find the basket in the third quarter and coach Solomon Ayinla, who had not planned to play because of injury, responded by rushing to the dressing room, getting changed and taking to the court.
This was the catalyst they needed and Wildcats finished the period five points ahead.
Whitaker and Andy Powlesland were the main scoring threats in the final quarter and Wildcats held on to scrape a narrow victory.
Whitaker finished with 23 points and a 61 per cent shooting percentage and Powlesland got 22.
Wildcats are at home to Reading Rockets at Tolworth Recreation Centre on Saturday (8.15pm).
