A child is dead and another is in a serious condition in hospital after a tree collapsed in a school playground in Ashstead, this afternoon.
Surrey Police received the emergency call to West Ashstead Primary School, Surrey, about 12.25pm after reports a tree had fallen on some children.
A police spokeswoman confirmed this afternoon that a girl had died in the playground accident. No other details about the identity of the dead child are available at this stage.
Another girl hurt in the freak accident has been taken to hospital with serious leg injures.
Four other children are reported to have suffered minor injuries.
Emergency services are still at the scene, a Surrey Police spokeswoman said.
