Amersham Museum is on the lookout for a new curator after Monica Mullins announced she is standing down after 20 years of service.

Mrs Mullins, 75, says she will give up her role at the museum in High Street, Old Amersham, in the autumn, because she believes someone younger should take over.

She said: "I think I am getting too old. One just hasn't got the energy any more. They (the committee) have the rest of the year to think about it in the meantime. I think it is inevitable if you have been doing something like this for this long."

She added that her plans are now to have a rest, as her work at the museum never seems to stop.

She said: "Working hours are variable because, as I am working at home, it just depends on what has to be done. It is thinking about it all the time. One always has a list of things that need doing."

Anthony del Tufo, museum chairman, said: "Anyone who knows our museum knows just how much she has created since 1983. When she first took on the job the museum was still housed in the British Legion Hall in Whielden Street."

When the museum moved to 49 High Street in 1990, she created the exhibits and has been making regular changes each year to keep bringing in visitors.

The attractions include a special exhibition of the history of Shardeloes from the 14th century to present day and the story of the town, its people and wildlife.

It is thought that the job can be split between two people one to devise and create new exhibits and the other would be responsible for research and the administrative tasks.
