Roehampton's teacher training provision has received outstanding results from its 2002 Ofsted inspections of six secondary education subjects.

The results for religious education, business studies and design technology were particularly good.

The university's dean of learning enhancement, Professor Mike Watts, said the results were "exceptional a fulsome reward for all the hard work and a wonderful start to the new academic year".

Roehampton is London's longest established teacher training provider, having placed teachers in the profession for over a century-and-a-half.

Around a quarter of its current students are training to be teachers, at either primary or secondary level.

Initial

Inspections of all university "initial teacher education providers" are required by Government watchdog Ofsted.

The criteria covers the quality of training, the accuracy and consistency of assessment of trainees against the standards for QTS, the trainees' subject knowledge and understanding, the trainees' planning, teaching and class management, and the trainees' monitoring, assessment, recording and accountability.

The six subjects inspected over 2001 to 2002 join the four other subjects from the university's School of Initial Teacher Education, which were inspected over 2000 to 2001.
