THE body of a man recovered from the River Thames at Penton Hook in Staines on Tuesday afternoon last week has been named as John Goodings.

The 66-year-old Egham resident is believed to have jumped into the river from Staines Bridge, just after 2pm, in what is believed to have been a suicide attempt.

Seeing the drowning man float past the Swan Hotel in Staines, an office worker abandoned his lunch and dived in to rescue the man, but was unable to reach him.

Police recovered Mr Goodings' body half a mile from Staines Bridge, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at Ashford Hospital.

The brave office worker was also taken to hospital for a routine check-up after his rescue attempt.

An inquest into his death was held on Tuesday and proved inconclusive, but Surrey Police have stated that they are not treating his death as suspicious.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Det Sgt Nick Hemmant, of Staines CID, on 01784 450261.
