THOUSANDS of people turned up to show their support for an anti-war protest in Richmond town centre on Saturday.
The protest was led by Richmond team vicar Julian Reindorp, Richmond Park MP Jenny Tonge and Liberal Democrat mayoral candidate for London, Susan Kramer who took over The Quadrant with banners, placards and a Stop the War stall.
Local politicians and residents collected 1,500 signatures on petitions opposing military action against Iraq. The final count will include many more petitions from churches and individuals.
The three original organisers, Jill Grist, Reverend Julian Reindorp and Linda Miller, were inundated with offers of support after advertising their plans.
Jill Grist, who lives in Kings Road, Richmond, said: "If there is unilateral action without UN approval then there will be a huge revolt within the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats will unite against it. Tony Blair really will be in an impossible position."
As well as collecting signatures, the demonstration was a chance for the organisers to collect details of local residents interested in further action.
Ms Grist said: "We're going to take a block group to the big march in London on February 15th, if people want to meet us at Richmond Station at 12 noon on the day.
"The organisers will be advertising the march on February 15th by leafleting in the town centre and at Richmond Station on February 8th, 12th and 13th."
At the time of going to press it was unknown whether or not the march will be able to finish in Hyde Park as planned.
Following complaints from Royal Park Police, the organisers have been told they cannot hold a rally in the park.
