WELLING will be turning back the clock next month to celebrate the 60th anniversary of VJ Day.

The town partnership has organised a series of events.

The celebrations will begin in the main shopping centre on September 17, with street musicians and a collection for the Royal Air Force Association's Wings Appeal.

Shops in the town can enter a competition for the best wartime-themed shop or display, with a £100 prize donated by the partnership.

The following day, celebrations will switch to Welling United FC, Park View Road.

Wartime veterans will pick up a ration-pack-style lunch and be entertained by a big band playing 1940s' music.

Their admission price will be to pin their contribution to the exhibition of memories in the main marquee.

Cem and Gemma from the BBC television contest Dance Fever will perform in a Thanks for Our Future afternoon show.

In the evening, former cast members from Les Miserables will perform their Sing for Victory show.

Two hundred public tickets are available for the afternoon show priced £5 for adults, £2.50 for children and OAPs free.

Tickets for the evening show are £15, with corporate tables at £250 and £350.

The partnership is also looking for adults and uniformed youth groups to help set up and steward the day.

For tickets, call 07774 628 439 from Monday to Friday between 10am and 5pm.
