THE victim gunned down in a drive-by shooting in a quiet residential street has been named.

Father-of-six Billy Marney, 38, was outside his home in Mill Place, Crayford, at around 10pm on June 23 when he was shot from a passing car.

He was taken to Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, where he died three days later. It was the third attempt on his life.

Mr Marney had a string of previous convictions, including one for punching a policeman and breaking the officer's jaw.

In the first murder attempt in 1996, he was shot outside the Badgers Mount pub, Badgers Mount.

A year later, a second attempt was made, this time outside his home. He was shot four times in front of his children as he got out of his car.

Despite one bullet passing through his skull and out of his cheek Mr Marney survived, although four of the bullets remained lodged in his body.

In 2001, Mr Marney was jailed for 10 years after being caught with an arsenal of weapons.

When policed stopped his car in Parsonage Manorway, Belvedere, in September 2000, he had a loaded Beretta pistol tucked into the waistband of his trousers.

The officers then searched the car and found a .22 Ruger sniper rifle with a telescopic sight, a silencer and more than 300 rounds of ammunition.

The Old Bailey heard Mr Marney was the head of a family involved in a gipsy blood-feud over drug dealing and bootlegging.

Mr Marney told the court he was carrying the weapons for "self defence".

Further tests are being carried out to establish the cause of his death, following a post-mortem examination at Queen Mary's .

An inquest into his death was opened at Croydon Coroner's Court on June 28 and adjourned to a date to be fixed.
