THE only Tube station to serve the borough of Greenwich is set for a multi-million pound revamp.
North Greenwich station will undergo £8.6m worth of improvements later this year, as part of a package of measures planned for the Jubilee Line.
This will mean the station will be able to take extra passengers and more trains.
It will also provide improved transport links for planned developments such as Greenwich Reach and the soon-to-be re-vamped Millennium Dome.
The work is due to start in December and will see the installation of two new escalators and a fixed staircase.
A seventh carriage will also be added to all trains, meaning the service will be able to cater for an extra 3,000 passengers an hour.
And from next January, a new timetable offering more trains will be introduced on the Jubilee Line.
The work is being funded by English Partnerships, the National Regeneration Agency and Meridian Delta Ltd.
London Assembly member for Lewisham and Greenwich Len Duvall said: "I'm very pleased about these planned improvements.
"The Jubilee Line extension is the only underground line to serve Greenwich and provides a vital link to Docklands and Central London.
"Any moves to improve the capacity of the station should be welcomed."
