A NEW conservation area has been given the green light and a further two were extended as councillors bid to protect the borough's heritage.
The new area around Elm Road, Beckenham, was created following a heritage study commissioned in March 2004 amid fears the unique character of parts of the borough was under threat.
The Aldersmead Road and the Shortlands Road Conservation Areas are also being extended following a decision made at the environment portfolio meeting on May 17.
Portfolio holder Councillor George Taylor said: "We have a wealth of Victorian and Edwardian heritage. We will not stand by and see it disappear and are therefore taking action."
Elm, Cedars and Beckenham Roads, which will form part of the new conservation area, are characterised by late Victorian houses and include The Studio and Beckenham Library on Beckenham Road.
