A PRIMARY school has been praised by Ofsted inspectors.

Downderry Primary School, Downderry Road, Downham, was praised for improving standards in English, maths and science.

The inspection report also pays tribute to the leadership and management at the school.

Inspectors visited the school for three days in March and found teaching standards had improved since their last inspection two years ago.

The report says parents "hold Downderry in high regard" and the level of achievement is "very good".

But it was the school's senior staff which was singled out for particular praise for its direct approach and strong leadership.

Headteacher Colin Edwards said: "We are delighted with the report. It shows the hard work, dedication and commitment of staff and pupils, plus the excellent support of parents.

"We note the comments on areas to improve and have already taken steps to implement them."

Chairman of governors John Harrington says the report cements the school's place as "one of the most improved in the country".
