This season plaits are back. The look for spring/summer 2010 is feminine, chic and there is a variation to suit everyone.
Whether you want to go for bunches of braids, classic cornrows or easy and elegant twists, take your inspiration from the catwalk and celebrities with pretty plaits.
Worn simple or sexy and packed with attitude, there’s no getting away from this easy to wear trend. Jed Hamill from Graham Webb International is here to help you find the perfect look.
School girl chic
Spotted on Gossip Girl star Blake Lively this look is super chic and elegant. An evolution of autumn/winter’s high ponytails, Blake has chosen to keep it sleek and wear it high and proud.
Serum is every girl’s secret weapon this season as hair is to be styled but not overloaded with product. Try smooth silky frizz free shine serum (£9.50 150ml) from Clynol’s Style range.
Recreate this look by pulling hair into a high ponytail and securing with a band. Separate the hair into four sections, leaving the bottom section free and use the remaining three sections to plait the hair down to the bottom.
Secure with another band and use remaining hair to wrap around the ponytail to hide the band at the top and secure underneath using pins.
It’s the perfect style for your girls’ night out on the town!
Alice band braid
I just love (500) Days of Summer star Zooey Deschanel’s vintage style. She always looks so feminine and effortlessly beautiful. Recently seen wearing the Alice band braid with flowing waves, she is staying true to her signature look.
This style is so easy to achieve with just a few pins for long to mid-length haired ladies.
Select a section of hair from just above the ear about an inch and a half thick and braid the hair upwards so that it will lay flat when you pull it over.
Secure the hair with a snag band and lay the braid as an Alice band, pinning it behind your ear. Now pull your hair from behind the braid over to cover your ears on both sides for an elegantly girly look and spray with move free flow flexible spray (£7.15 500ml) from Clynol’s Style range to hold in place without stickiness ... perfect!
Striking side plaits
Cheryl Cole was wearing this look months ago on The X Factor and indie chick Fearne Cotton was rocking this look at the Brits 2010, so it must be hot!
The perfect look day or night, reminiscent of Narnia’s perfect plaits and fairy princess style braids, the loose plait is back and far from the equestrian looks with which it is so fondly associated.
Lustful and sexy, this look is the perfect accessory to either feminine floral prints or evening glamour.
Simply pull all of your hair loosely over to one side, braid and secure with a band. Don’t be afraid of any wispy or stray hairs, as this adds to the wistful look of this style ... absolutely beautiful!
Cornrow cutie
Add some attitude to your style and like Shakira opt for the classic cornrow to add some interest to your look.
The key to this however is not to go overboard.
Cornrows are a very sweet look, but overkill just doesn’t work for the best of us. It might work for Alicia Keys but that doesn’t mean that it’ll work for you.
Stick to two or three braids at the most on one side. Each section should be around an inch wide at the biggest. Spray the section of hair with fix animator finishing spray (£8.25 300ml) from Clynol’s Style range and comb through to detangle.
It’s easier if you pin the hair that you aren’t braiding away so that you don’t accidentally pick it up as you plait.
Now braid the hair towards the ear, picking up a piece of hair each time, ensuring that your braid is kept tight. To secure use a snag band or a clip, depending on your desired look. Repeat as necessary until your style is complete.
Street and chic all at the same time.
Au Français
The French plait is a timeless look and there is something to suit everyone as demonstrated by starlets Jessica Alba, Sarah Michelle Gellar and the lovely Alexa Chung.
Mid-length haired ladies have finally found their soulmate as even layered locks can be made into a French plait.
Make a statement by using the French plait to add interest to your style, either by pulling away from your face and braiding your fringe or plaiting each side into a half up do.
This look is so versatile for all. Like with the cornrow, it’s all about deciding on your style and where you want to add the interest, so sectioning off the you want to focus on.
For the super brave, why not try milkmaid style plaits for a sophisticated and classy occasion. There’s a look to suit all.
