Shoes have always been an essential staple in every woman’s wardrobe and the business has become a fast-paced and well-heeled industry.

Bluewater apprentices Katie Barnard and Piri Logendran interviewed Nine West creative director Fred Allard about his success and inspirations throughout his career.

We (Bluewater apprentices Katie and Piri) both lead very different lives but one thing we agree on is that we love shoes!

Comfy is good but heels are better. From going to work to planning a night out, footwear plays an important part to finishing off that perfect outfit.

We both know what we like when it comes to buying our favourite footwear, but neither of us claim to be experts on what makes the ultimate shoe.

It’s reassuring to know that there is someone like Fred Allard designing seasonal footwear at Nine West for every occasion.

With more than 25 years of experience in fashion and design, he was the person we just had to speak to.

What are your inspirations for the spring/summer 2010 collection?

Following the tough Gladiator looks that we had been seeing, I really wanted to make this season softer and more feminine, while still maintaining an edgy appeal.

So, throughout the collection you’ll see muted colours with subtle stud details and neutral metallics.

If you could pick your favourite item from the collection what would it be?

Platform sandals are always a favourite of mine.

What made you choose to design women’s shoes, as opposed to other areas of the fashion industry?

My father was in the shoe business, so I was around the footwear industry all of my life, which led me to study design further in Paris.

Most designers have a muse, who would be yours?

Right now I love Lady Gaga, Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga, Marion Cotillard, January Jones, Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, Giuseppe Zanotti.

Is there anyone that has influenced your early career?

My father, and I also learned a lot from working at such brands as Stephane Kelian and Castaner.

What would be your top tips to get ahead in the fashion industry?

Work hard, always be a team player and most of all, believe in what you do.

Can you give any hints about the autumn/winter 2010 collection?

A lot of feminine tailored looks of the 70s, and baroque jewel tones.
