We have all have heard of the devastating earthquake that has happened in the small Caribbean island of Haiti, over 100,000 are feared dead in the hazard that occurred in mid-January. Infrastructure has extensively been damaged and this lead to the loss of numerous human lives. Many relief funds, especially the Red Cross and the UN have contributed vastly by raising money for aid to be sent over to Haiti. Even celebrities such as George Clooney have come together to raise awareness and encourage donations to send aid to the needy. However, according to many news agencies, the aid given to Haiti is having difficulty to reach people at the grass root level and is not sustainable (not providing any long term help what-so-ever). We need to find a way of providing the locals with the equipment they need to start a new life; this is not being done.

Beneath the surface of it all, we are forgetting something very important. The fact that an earthquake happen every day in every corner of the world, and even cause loss of life that we are completely oblivious to. For example, a group of scientists believe that a community in a remote village in Canada suffered terrible losses due to an earthquake in their area. Yet no public awareness was raised at all. It is true that the extent of human lives lost was not as big as the Haiti earthquake none the less; human lives had been lost and affected. They have not received any help from the government or any other charities. Maybe we should also consider others that live in remote areas in the world who are not publicised by the media. Surely they must have suffered the angst, grief and terror that the people of Haiti. Is it correct for us to help a country because it is protected by the UN and completely disregard any other secluded country going through a similar situation on a smaller scale?
