TWO drunken yobs have been locked up after attacking a man who confronted them over their rowdy behaviour at Lee train station.
The 17-year-old boys from Lee and Greenwich, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced at Camberwell Youth Court after pleading guilty to GBH with intent.
Both were given 18-month sentences.
British Transport Police say the teenagers were at Lee station at around 3.20pm on December 18 when they began abusing passengers on the platform before boarding a London-bound train.
Police say both the boys were drunk.
Once on board one of the youths continued to abuse people on the platform while the other prevented the train doors from closing.
A 55-year-old man approached the youths and asked them to let the doors close but instead they pulled the emergency door release handle.
One of the thugs punched the man in the face, knocking him to the floor, while the other smashed a bottle of wine over his head.
The pair fled the station and split up but the driver of the train and another passenger chased after them.
One of the yobs started running towards the train driver, who grabbed him and held him on the ground until officers arrived to arrest him.
The other youth was arrested nearby.
The victim, from Orpington, required hospital treatment for injuries to his head, face and arm.
PC Simon Collins, from British Transport Police CID, said: “Thanks to the train driver’s quick thinking, reactions and bravery he was able to hold one of the youths until officers arrived.
“That he did this despite the youth struggling violently, and despite knowing he had already used a weapon on a passenger, is truly commendable.
“I hope the combined 36-month sentence handed down shows just how seriously these sorts of offences are treated by police investigators and the courts.”
