A PLAQUE remembering the life of a 24-year-old who was killed by armed rebels in Africa has been unveiled at a school.
Martin Friend was murdered in 1999 by Hutu militiamen as he travelled through Uganda, close to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He was deputy head boy at the Priory School in Tintagel Road, Orpington, in 1992 and his parents, Ron and Pauline, helped unveil a plaque in the school’s library in his memory.
Head of sixth form Andy Edwards said: “After the ceremony Ron and Pauline spent time talking to those sixth form students who have forged a link with a school in Kenya and who are going to visit and teach there in the summer."
In 2008, Martin’s family successfully opened a new school in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
