FOR the first time in its history, a girls’ cricket team from Bexley will compete in the finals of London’s youth games.

The girls’ under-13 team, with players from Bexley, Sidcup and Colfeians cricket clubs, made it through to the finals of the indoor six-a-side event by winning all their qualifying matches at Harrow Leisure Centre.

Their wins included an edge-of-the-seat match against current champions Redbridge, in which both teams scored the same number of runs, but Bexley lost fewer wickets.

Team manager John Daniels said: “The girls did the borough proud.

“They qualified from a difficult group.”

He added: “This achievement just shows how girls’ cricket in Bexley is going from strength to strength.”

The finals of the Balfour Beattie London Youth Games cricket competition takes place at Lord’s Cricket Ground in St John’s Wood on March 6.
