A MURDER inquiry is under way and a 52-year-old woman has been arrested after a man died following a flat fire.
The 63-year-old man, believed by police to be Frank Hancock, of Pattenden Road, Catford, was rescued by fire fighters last Thursday (Feb 4).
He was taken to Lewisham Hospital suffering from severe burns but was transferred to Chelmsford hospital where he died on February 9.
Three fire engines from Lewisham and Forest Hill had been called to the ground floor flat fire in Pattenden Road at around 4.30pm.
On February 5 a 52-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
She was taken to a south London police station and has been bailed to return next month pending further enquiries.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for later today (Feb 11) at Greenwich mortuary.
Det Ch Ins Caroline Goode from the Met Homicide and Serious Crime Command said: "We would like to appeal for witnesses to come forward who may have seen Mr Hancock on February 4.”
Anyone who saw anything suspicious between 9.30am and 4.30pm that day should call police on 020 8721 4868.
