A CHARITY in north Kent is the first in the country to appoint a specialist support worker for child victims of sex abuse.

This month Rebecca Macey began work as the young persons independent sexual violence advisor (YP-ISVA) at Gravesend-based rape and sexual abuse victims charity Family Matters.

The role is the first of its kind in the UK, and the 28-year-old will support children who have been referred to the charity by a variety of organisations, including Kent police and Darent Valley Hospital.

For the last nine years Miss Macey has counselled both adults and children for the charity, which helps more than 4,000 people a year, 200 of which are under 18.

She said: “By focusing only on children, I’m able to see them and respond to their various needs much quicker.

“For example, if a child has been abused within the family home, I’m able to find them safe and appropriate accommodation.”

Miss Macey will be able to see victims at the charity’s offices in Wrotham Road or in a place of their choosing, and is keen to reach out to people to encourage them to seek support.

She said: “I’ll do outreach work to prevent young people becoming victims. There are particular vulnerable groups I want to help, such as those with learning difficulties or working in the sex trade.”

Miss Macey will also work closely with police and the Crown Prosecution Service to help children feel safe and supported giving evidence in criminal proceedings.

The Equalities and Human Rights Commission has funded the role for 14 months, and Family Matters will apply for grants to continue the work after this period.

Although she admits it is harrowing to hear about the terrible crimes committed against children, Miss Macey says it is worth it to give them the best support possible.

She said: “When I meet with a child who has experienced this trauma they are a victim, but I can be a part of them going on to become a survivor, and that’s a real privilege.”
