SHOPKEEPERS have welcomed the introduction of a dispersal zone.
The dispersal zone has been introduced in the Hayes and Coney Hall ward and gives the police the power to target youngsters and other people who are congregating and intimidating others in the area.
It started on January 29 and runs until July 28, and people who do not live in the area can also be asked to leave and banned from coming back for up to 24 hours.
Paul Henry who manages McColls newsagents in Station Approach, Hayes, welcomes the news.
He said: “I think it is a good idea because we tend to get a lot of youths hanging around near the station.”
Mr Henry, who lives in Orpington High Street, added: “We also get alot of shoplifting either after the schools close or at night.”
Sandy Loader, manager of Sponge Kitchens bakery also in Station Approach, said: “I think it is a good idea because a lot of youngsters hang around near the station and it can be quite intimidating for people who are walking on their own.”
Anyone who refuses to obey the order could face up to three months behind bars or a fine of up to £2,500.
Under 16s perceived to be causing trouble in the zone between 9pm and 6am may also be asked to leave unless they are supervised by a parent or responsible person over the age of 18.
Hayes and Coney Hall ward councillor Graham Arthur said: “I think there are problems, however, they are relatively small and are a lot better then they used to be because of the proactive work of the police and safer neighbourhood team.”
Head of the Hayes and Coney Hall safer neighbourhood team, Sergeant Tim Hall, said: "The PCSOs from the team have been working very hard at this location, engaging with the community and finding out their concerns and this dispersal order is a testament to their hard work and commitment in tackling these issues".
