A THREE tonne piece of sculpted granite has been moved into place to become the centrepiece of a new children’s play area.

The glacial rock, which has a hole carved through the middle, took staff and volunteers four hours to move across the grounds at Hall Place, Bourne Road, Bexley.

Eventually it will be surrounded by a grass maze.

The play area has been created as part of the Playbuilders scheme which will see 26 parks, playgrounds and open spaces around the borough, benefit from government funds for exciting improvements.

All of them will be ready by the summer and a grand opening event is planned for next month.

The aim of the scheme is to change the way children’s play spaces are commissioned, designed and built, to make them more imaginative, challenging and stimulating for children.

Bexley cabinet member for children’s services Councillor June Slaughter said; "This is the start of an exciting time for play in Bexley.

"Our extended school services team has worked alongside schools and young people to ensure each of the parks due to benefit, will have something for everyone.

“I am delighted that this sculpture is in place and I am looking forward to the rest of the park designs coming to life."
