TWO species of wagtail were the stars of the show as Bexley Royal Society for the Protection of Birds held its annual Big Garden Birdwatch at Hall Place in Bexley.

RSPB members set up telescopes and feeders in the grounds of the Tudor mansion in Bourne Road, so visitors could watch a variety of birds.

John Turner, who led the event said: “Although we did not see any unusual species this year, the wagtails were the centre of attention.

“In addition to the pied wagtail there were also grey wagtails, which breed under the river bridge at Hall Place.”

This year, lots of children were attracted to the event and more than 60 people took home the forms to log bird sightings in their own gardens to supply to the RSPB.

Last year, nationwide, a record 551,000 people took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch and Bexley RSPB is hoping to beat its own borough record of 1,165 adults and 141 children, which was set in 2007.
