THE owner of a skip hire business has been ordered to pay £6,000 after failing to comply with environmental legislation.
Mark Smith, who runs the business from Nightingale Grove in Lewisham, pleaded guilty at Greenwich Magistrates’ Court to failing to hold an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting Regulations of 2007.
The 33-year-old, of Blackdale Farm in Green Street Green, Dartford, was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay £2,000 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
The main aim of environmental permits is to protect human health and the environment against harmful effects caused by the collection, transport, treatment, storage and tipping of waste.
Environmental crime officer Mike Real said: “Mr Smith ignored previous warnings from The Environment Agency and continued to operate an illegal waste site.
“We will not tolerate the inappropriate disposal of waste and will take suitable enforcement action against those operating outside of the law.”
