Bexley Grammar School has received three awards from the Bexley Arts Council this year for their work on the 2009 school production of ‘Crazy for You’.
‘Crazy for You’ tells the story of New Yorker, Bobby Child, and his attempt to win the heart of the beautiful Polly Baker – a confident and independent cowgirl from Nevada. There are showgirls, cowboys, dance numbers and gun fights, all to the soundtrack of George Gershwin’s best musical creations.
The student’s version of the Gershwin musical, which was performed on four nights in July, won the Knowles Cup for Youth Theatre along with the Charles Meinardi Award for Musical Excellence. The third award, the Andrea Wigley for the Best/Most Promising Performer, went to Sam Haughton for his outstanding portrayal of Bobby Child.
Sam Haughton, along with director, Olly Medlicott, and other members of the cast and crew, attended the awards ceremony at the – Edward Alderton Theatre on Saturday 24th October. Those who attended had a very enjoyable evening collecting the awards. It was even discovered that the Charles Meinardi Award has never before been presented to students or young people. An outstanding achievement for the BGS band!
Many have agreed that the production was Bexley Grammar School’s best yet, with one parent saying it was worthy of a West End stage! The students and staff were particularly deserving of the awards after many months of work on the musical.
The students are currently working on their next production of ‘Guys and Dolls’, which will be performed in February, and promises to be just as spectacular!
