The speaker at our November meeting was Mr Frank Paine & his talk was entitled “Edwardian Nursery/Magic Lantern”.
He has a wonderful collection of Edwardian children’s toys & books, which were all on display & available for members to look at.
These included meccano sets, a tea set, a toy sewing machine, a doll, bricks, tin farmyard animals, bubble pipes, games, a telescope, a magic lantern microscope with original slides & a 1st World War periscope (known as a trench scope), plus a quantity of old lace.
The highlight of the talk was Mr Paine’s use of modern technology to enable us to see some of the wonderful slides made with printed transfers onto glass strips for the original magic lantern. They were amazingly clear & bright after all these years! All Mr Paine’s talks benefit the Diamond Riding Centre for the Handicapped at Carshalton.
Guild members had enjoyed a recent trip to the Keeping Gallery in Shortlands & are looking forward to seeing “The Sleeping Beauty” pantomime at the Churchill Theatre on 11th December.
Our Christmas Party would be held at the next meeting on 8th December.
