AN ESTIMATED 16,000 new homes are planned for the borough as part of a strategy to cope with London's burgeoning population.

The development in Greenwich will take place over the next 15 years when the capital's population is expected to increase by 800,000 to 8.1 million people, requiring more than 450,000 additional homes.

The announcement was part of Ken Livingstone's London Plan, a blueprint for planning and development in the capital, published on February 10.

A Greenwich Council spokesman said: "The figure of 16,000 new homes is in line with the borough's capacity.

"Any future planning decision within the borough has to reflect or be in general conformity with the London Plan."
