GRAVESEND: Musicians needed to secure band's ongoing future

AN HISTORIC band in Gravesend is trying to drum up support among young musicians to increase its dwindling membership.

Gravesend Borough Band, established 120 years ago, might have to cancel events this summer if it cannot find 10 new players and a conductor.

Band chairman and cornet player Mike Wanstall says the band's situation is "desperate" and he is urging young musicians in the community to come forward.

Mr Wanstall, 49, of The Fairway, said: "The concert band once had a 30-stong membership. Now it has gone down to 20 and we have to draw on talent from outside the borough. It would be such a shame to see it go to pieces.

"We need 10 new players two cornet players, one alto saxophonist, one tenor saxophonist, one baritone saxophonist, two euphonium players, two horn players, a drummer and a conductor."

"It would be so nice if we could fill those positions locally because a local band should have local members."

He added: "We would really like to attract more schoolchildren into the band so that we can be certain the band will be secure for future generations."

Gravesham mayor Councillor Valerie Ashenden said: "The borough band has been very supportive for Gravesham Council's remembrance service and we wish them every success in filling their vacancies."

Sandra Soder, from Gravesend's historical society, says it is very sad to see the band fighting for new members.

She said: "The musicians I know in the band are very enthusiastic.

"They would welcome any new players into their ranks."

Gravesend Borough Band was originally formed in 1880 as a brass band. In 1980 it became a concert, or military, band. Last year, the band made 12 appearances, including one at the Victorian bandstand in Eastbourne and the newly refurbished bandstand in Herne Bay.

Their longest surviving member is solo clarinetist Vera Bennett, who has been with the band for 50 years.

The band meets every Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Neighbourhood Community Centre in Rose Street, Northfleet.
