A PLAN to build a mental health unit near a school in Dartford has been thrown out by councillors.

The 60-bedroom two-storey low security unit would have treated patients with mental illness including depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.

Gravesend-based developer Cubfield Ltd wanted to build the unit in Brent Way, with a locked gate connecting it to a playing field at Gateway Primary School, Milestone Road.

Parents of pupils had raised concerns over how much of a risk patients with mental illness could be to staff and students.

Low security units deliver treatment and rehabilitation to people with disturbed behaviour who have been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Residents launched the Newtown Residents’ Action Group to oppose the planning application, which is now expected to be referred to the Secretary of State if the decision is appealed.

Gary Reynolds, who heads the group and lives in nearby Brent Close, said: “It is fantastic that it has gone this way because we did it for the children.

“It is a step in the right direction and the battle is half won but I now hope it goes the whole way.”

Speaking at Dartford Council’s development control board meeting, which heard the application, Councillor Roger Perfitt said: “The fact is there is a genuine fear in the community with more than 300 people complaining about it.

“We do not know who will be in there so for this reason I propose to turn it down.”

The developer was not available for comment.
