CAMPAIGNERS and residents pedalled on bikes to power the screening of a film.

More than 100 people attended a free screening of climate change film The Age of Stupid at Deptford’s Laban dance centre, Creekside, on August 6.

The energy needed to power the film was generated by more than 50 audience members who took turns to ride six bikes, producing a total of at least 200 watts.

Joan Ruddock, Lewisham Deptford MP and minister for energy and climate change, attended the event organised by charity Oxfam.

She says the world faces its biggest challenge yet as environment ministers and officials are set to meet in Copenhagen in December to thrash out a global deal on climate change.

She said: “Global action is not the only answer, climate change also needs local action.

“Every single one of us must start making the changes necessary in our everyday lives and Oxfam's pedal-powered screening is a fun, creative way to bring this urgent issue to the attention of the audience.”

The film stars Pete Postlethwaite as an archivist in a future where climate change has devastated the Earth.

He looks back on past footage of people around the world, asking why nothing was done to prevent global warming.

The event was organised by charity Oxfam which helps some of the poorest people around the world.

Oxfam campaigner Lucy Aitken-Read said: “By showing this film we get to portray the issues surrounding climate change in a creative way and get people talking about the impact it has on their community and on the world's poorest communities.

“We feel that many Londoners came away tonight determined to put more pressure on politicians to take decisive action at the critical international climate talks in Copenhagen this December."
