A SUPERMARKET chain got more than it bargained for when it held a two-day recruitment event for its new store.
Morrisons will be opening the revamped former Co-op store in Welling High Street in the next few months.
It hired the Falconwood Community Centre in The Green, Welling, so people could find out about the 250 jobs on offer and make an application.
But when the doors opened on Monday, the queue of interested people stretched round the block.
Malcolm Hill, 57, from Bexleyheath, was one of those who turned up to see what jobs were available.
He said: “I couldn’t even park my car. I was shocked at the size of the queue. It was like being at Disneyland queueing for the rides.”
Ward councillor Nigel Betts added: “It has been quite a local event.”
Although the company could not say how many people had turned up to the recruitment days, a spokesman said: “It is safe to say thousands.”
Gail Roberts, Morrisons’ retail recruitment manager said: “We have had an amazing response.”
