A PETITION has been started by councillors trying to save some 191-year-old almshouses from possible closure.
Seventy elderly residents at the Queen Elizabeth College almshouses on Greenwich High Road have been told by Drapers' Company, which owns the buildings, they may be given 12-months' notice to leave.
But in a bid to save the 40 self-contained one bedroom cottages, Labour councillors for Greenwich, Councillor Maureen O’Mara, Cllr Margaret Mythen and Cllr David Grant have started a petition
But chief executive of Drapers' Company, Alastair Ross, said: "Absolutely nothing has been decided yet.
"The problem is that they are listed buildings and so it's difficult to make modifications and upgrades to bring them up to the standard we want.
"It goes without saying that no one is going to end up on the street."
