Sun, sea, sand and lots of summer fun – what’s not to like? But while a sunny holiday can be good for the soul, it can play hell with your hair - especially if your locks are no longer au naturel (well, whose are?). There are ways to keep your colour looking hot while you are keeping cool, just ask Jed Hamill of Graham Webb International.

Don't colour too late: We all work long and hard for our holiday so it’s clear we are going to try to get in shape before we go – and this means our body and our hair.

Remember though that chemically treated (coloured/permed) hair is more vulnerable to environmental conditions such as sun, water and humidity, so it’s crucial you get your colour done at least three weeks before your departure date.

Your hair has time to settle down and will be less likely to be damaged.

It’s also a good idea to book an appointment for your return as well. There’s no point coming back fresh and glowing when your hair could do with an injection of oomph to pep it up.

A treatment such as Clynol Viton Go Blonde Treat shine treatment (£10.90 200ml) is a fantastic home moisture kick for highlighted hair. It only takes minutes but you’ll feel the results for ages.

Treat your hair like your skin: These days there’s no way anyone would lie on the beach covered in olive oil. We're all totally on board with the fact that we need to slap on high SPF cream to protect our skin in the sun, but what about our hair?

You may love the way the sun lightens your locks, but with every ray your hair is getting a little bit more ruined!

UV rays are just as damaging to hair as they are to skin. Not only will they break down protein in your hair, they'll dull your colour and leave your lengths high and dry.

Cover up during the day with a hat or headscarf and always use a protective suncare range with UV protection such as the Clynol id care sun range (£20.95), a complete suncare range, shampoo, conditioner and treatment mask, to use throughout your holiday which comes as a set in a gorgeous sunbag.

In the evenings treat yourself to a deep conditioning properties of id care sun intense after sun mask (50ml), which gives intense nutrition to parched hair, leaving it lustrous and easy to manage.

Take care with the chlorine: Who can resist a dip in a lovely fresh pool when the temperature outside is soaring, but blondes in particular need to watch their backs when it comes to chlorine.

It’s not that chlorine itself ruins your hair, but heavy metals like copper which are actually within the chlorine. The chlorine can damage the hair cuticle, which then allows these metals to enter the hair follicle.

Remember to wet your hair with tap/bottled water (or take a pooolside shower if one is available) before you swim as wet hair will soak up less chlorine.

Follow your swim with another shower to cleanse again and finally remove any traces of metals with a special after-sun shampoo, such as id care sun pure after sun hair and body shampoo.
