POLICE will return to the spot in West Wickham where a football manager was shot dead in an attempt to gather more evidence.

Ryan Musgrove, 36, was killed by a lone gunman on Thursday afternoon (July 16) at around 6.30pm.

A week on, officers have yet to make any arrests and so will return to Sparrows Den playing fields tomorrow afternoon (July 23) to talk to motorists, dog walkers and residents in a attempt to help piece together more evidence.

Mr Musgrove, first team manager at Coney Hall Football Club, was killed by a single bullet when a masked gunman burst from the bushes and shot the father-of-two in the heart.

The electrician's murder is being investigated by the homicide and serious crime command, led by Detective Chief Inspector John McFarlane.

DCI McFarlane said: "Mr Musgrove parked at the side of the playing fields just after 6pm that evening.

"He walked through the gate and met two friends. The three men were standing talking at the side of the fields.

“Suddenly a man jumped out of the bushes, fired several shots with a small hand gun, then rode away on a mountain bike across the adjacent field in the direction of New Addington.”

He added: "I have no idea why Mr Musgrove was targeted.”

Detectives also know relatively little about the shooter himself apart from he was probably aged under 30, possibly in his late teens.

His hat, goggles and white mask helped to shield his identity from Mr Musgrove’s team mates, who were gathering for training on the playing fields in Addington Road.

Police say the gunman, wearing dark clothing, escaped on a dark, possibly blue, mountain bike.
