PATIENTS are being treated as normal at Darent Valley Hospital, despite having to rely on a generator as a result of the power failure.

After electricity went out on Monday, the hospital’s two large diesel-powered generators returned power within a couple of minutes.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “In the event of a power cut Darent Valley Hospital is able to continue to function normally on emergency generator power.

“When the mains power failed without notice on Monday, the two generators were up and running within 90 seconds.

“Hospital staff responded rapidly to the situation and contingency plans were put in place.

“The hospital can run indefinitely on generator power, which is sufficient to meet the normal energy needs of the hospital.

“We are continuing to deliver a normal service to our patients.

“As a sensible precaution we are reducing energy usage where possible, for example lighting in office and storage areas.”
