POLICE have launched an investigation into the cause of a fire on a cable bridge that brought power cuts to thousands of residents.
It is believed the fire was started by vandals interfering with the cables.
EDF Energy has engineers working around the clock to restore power, and generators have been brought in to provide back up power at 38 sites across Bexley, Dartford and Orpington.
Kent police Chief Inspector Peter Ayling said: “Kent police has launched an investigation into the cause of a fire which has affected the power supply to thousands of homes in the Dartford area.
“We are working closely with Kent Fire and Rescue Service fire investigators and other partners to minimise the risk and disruption to the community.
“However, extensive fire damage has been caused to a cable tower which in turn has impacted heavily on both local businesses and residents.
“We have committed significant resources to investigate the cause of the incident and inquiries are ongoing. It unclear at this stage whether this was criminal damage to or attempted theft of high voltage cable.
“Along with our partners, we are working to reassure the local community and provide assistance to those who are vulnerable.”
