MPs have joined a pop music kingpin and reality TV star to launch a volunteering event.

Erith and Thamesmead MP John Austin and Eltham MP Clive Efford joined Pete Waterman and Apprentice star Claire Young to launch Make a Difference Day.

The event, also supported by Lewisham West MP Jim Dowd, happens on October 31 and aims to be the country’s biggest day of volunteering.

Organising charity CSV (Community Service Volunteers), wants people to hold an activity that will lift community spirits and bring people together.

Mr Austin said: “It's easy to forget in the day-to-day chaos how powerful we are to make changes.

“Through volunteering we can take action to spread kindness and make a real difference which is why I'm signing up this year."

The event is in its 14th year and aims to improve on more than 100,000 people who volunteered last time.
