WORK on a green community centre is gathering pace.
The Woolwich Centre, part of the Love Lane development, will feature a library, business centre, Greenwich Council’s main contact centre, an exhibition and meeting space.
Built from recycled materials, the building will feature natural ventilation and lighting, a heat recovery system, and solar panels on the roof.
Sections of the roof will also be used as a habitat for birds and insects.
Greenwich Council’s cabinet member for modernisation Councillor Sajid Jawaid, was on site to welcome a 50-metre crane and view progress on the project.
He said: “It is very exciting to see work underway.
“This will be a wonderful civic building for the community of Greenwich to be proud of.”
It is due to open in summer 2011 and is being built by developer Wates Group.
