PROTESTERS demonstrating on the roof of a school earmarked for demolition are hopeful their demands will be met soon.
Since April 23, mums and their supporters have been on the roof of Lewisham Bridge School, demanding students are returned after they were relocated in preparation for the building’s demolition.
But Lewisham Council plans to build a new school for three to 16-year-olds on the Elmira Street site were put on hold following the decision to grant the building Grade II listed status.
The council has appealed the listing and is waiting for a response from the Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
On Monday (July 13), around 50 parents met headteacher Julia Holmes and the council’s head of school effectiveness Chris Threllfall to discuss the school’s future.
At the meeting parents were given comment forms to return to the council.
Protester and mum Eleanor Davies, of Ermine Road, Lewisham, says she is hopeful children will be returned to the school if the council’s appeal is rejected.
The 40-year-old said: “I think the protest has kept the debate alive and put Lewisham Council under pressure.
“I think if we get the letter that the children can return then it’s a victory for us because that was our original demand.”
A council spokesman says no decisions will be made until the Government responds to the council’s appeal.
