A BENEFIT cheat has been given a suspended prison sentence after illegally claiming more than £24,000 in benefits.

Louise Carr, of Fairway Court, The Grove, Gravesend, was given a 180-day sentence suspended for two years after pleading guilty to benefit fraud at Dartford Magistrates’ Court.

She was also ordered to complete 240 hours of community service and repay the full amount.

The 30-year-old claimed a total of £24,188 in income support, housing and council tax benefits as a single parent when in fact she was living with her partner.

Officers from Gravesham Council began an investigation into Carr’s claims after receiving an allegation that her partner was living with her at her address.

Carr was then interviewed and confessed the allegation was true.

Gravesham Council cabinet member for transformation Councillor Adrian Warburton said: “Benefit cheats steal money from honest members of the community who need financial help.

“I hope Miss Carr’s sentence sends a clear message to all benefit cheats that they will be caught and will be punished.”
