A REWARD card aimed at encouraging townspeople to use their local independent shops is being launched in the Erith area.
Already more than 40 shops, pubs and businesses in Erith and Northumberland Heath have signed up to the Wedge Card.
The card was created by the founder of The Big Issue, John Bird, and his daughter Diana in 2006.
Erith is the first area outside London chosen for the card, which is already in operation in 20 neighbourhoods across the capital.
In partnership with housing association Orbit South, people will be rewarded with discounts and special offers for using it.
Mr Bird will launch the card at the Northumberland Heath summer slam on July 30.
He said: “It is in the family-owned cafes, butchers and bookshops people get to know one another and become part of their community.”
