BEXLEY and Bromley councils have been commended for the care they take with their war memorials.

The two boroughs have been held up to other London boroughs as examples of best practice in a report by the London Assembly.

The report calls for more to be done to protect the capital’s memorials from neglect, theft and vandalism.

Bexley, which has 39 memorials, has a publicly available, comprehensive list of memorials on public and private land, which is regularly updated and any development which may affect one of them, takes the memorial into account.

It maintains and cleans the memorials and adds names in consultation with the Imperial War Museum.

It also hopes to put the list online.

Bromley, with 366 memorials, also has a five volume list, with short histories and photographs, which is available in some libraries and the civic centre.

But it has not been updated in the last 10 years and there are no plans to put it on-line.

Bromley maintains 18 memorials.
